A couple of days ago, I talked about taking personal responsibility for what you have created. Most people are taught the blame and shame game — that they will be severely punished for doing something wrong. So, they develop a survival strategy of maintaining the status quo, and when things go wrong, pushing the blame on others, if they can. Then, they feel ashamed for not taking personal responsibility. This becomes habitual behavior, and their lives become a painful cycle of denial and blaming, and their consciousness is focused on victimhood. So, they do whatever they can to alleviate the pain — becoming addicted to television, alcohol, drugs, sex, violence, video games, and so on. My Elders describe these people as asleep — they are totally unconscious about having the inherent power to create good in their lives.
We are in the middle of chaotic times. For those mired in victim consciousness, they will find ample opportunity to blame, to feel shame, and to maintain their habitual way of thinking. These folks’ lives will gradually disintegrate until their bodies finally die, just like their minds did ages ago. But, for those few who are willing to wake up and break away from the pack, the opportunity to live an extraordinary life is also open during chaos. More new millionaires were made during The Depression than at any other time in American history. These were out-of-the-box thinkers who saw opportunity hidden in crisis.
One of my mentors said, “Success is a decision.” I see ample evidence of this truism every day, as I watch the people I coach. Every moment of every day we have multiple choice points where we can decide to be more awake or more asleep, where we can walk one step toward or away from our dreams.
That is why the bulk of what I teach beginners is awareness — watching your thoughts and emotions to see if you are on the opportunity or crisis side of the scale. Slowing thoughts down so that you can see how you make decisions is an integral part of changing your mind. Until you are aware of where you live, you cannot move.
Jesus said, “Look at the fruit on the tree.” If the fruit is luscious and tastes wonderful, then you are in the moment and have positive thoughts backed up by love-based emotions and relevant actions. If your fruit is bitter, then you are mired in the past, protecting yourself with negative thoughts and fear-based emotions, hardly ever acting in your own best interests.
In The Matrix Neo learns about the possible insidious nature of the reality he lives in. In the first 4 1/2 minutes of this clip from the film, Morpheus offers Neo a red pill and a blue pill. With one choice, he remains asleep; with the other he awakens to the truth. In a free will universe, you, too, have a choice every single moment — to remain asleep or to awaken to the truth of who you are.
